Major and mid-range department stores

Large-scale distribution chains (major and mid-range department stores) account for the largest share of the French market in terms of seafood distribution : approximately 60% of sea products consumed in France come from department stores (around 43% in a fresh state and around 57% in a frozen state).

Integration of sustainable development criteria in the procurement policy of sea products in the supermarket distribution sector began in the early 2000s. This sector was the precursor in this field and, gradually, some chains began to develop their own sustainability policies for their procurement of sea products, using several approaches with various levels of commitment.
